There is more to silence than we imagine
A winter garden can seem almost silent.
The birds are quieter, the leaves have fallen, and nature appears to be resting.
But silence is rarely empty. There is a whole world of sound waiting to be discovered - the gentle movement of air through bare branches, the distant call of a bird, the rustle of leaves, perhaps even the almost imperceptible movement of water.
An Invitation to Listen
Experience the garden with your ears, through the listening trumpet and then with a new awareness.
Listen Naturally
Stand quietly for a moment.
Close your eyes if you feel comfortable. What can you hear? Notice sounds nearby and those further away.
Listen Through the Trumpet
Place your ear against the listening trumpet. Allow the sounds of the garden to come to you. You may discover sounds you hadn't even realised were there.
Listen Again
Step away from the trumpet and listen once more.
The garden hasn't changed, but perhaps the way you listen has.
Return on a windy day, after rain, or when spring begins to awaken. Each season brings its own soundscape. Even the quietest winter day has a voice.
