A World of Quiet Colours
Winter is often described as a grey and colourless season. The vibrant greens of summer have disappeared, the golden leaves of autumn have fallen, and the landscape seems to have settled into a quieter world.
But look a little more closely.
There is silver in the bark of a birch, copper in the leaves still clinging to an oak, deep green in the moss, soft purple in bare twigs and countless subtle shades in the winter sky.
Winter has not lost its colours. They have simply become more subtle.
Winter Reflection
Nothing is Quite Colourless
When the bright greens and golds of the warmer months have gone, other colours begin to take their place.
Frost turns leaves and grasses into delicate works of art. Bare branches reveal rich textures and tones. The low winter sun transforms the landscape, bringing warmth to the coldest days.
What first appears to be a muted landscape is, in fact, a rich and varied palette - if we take the time to look.
An Invitation to Notice
Explore through your senses
Look Beyond the Green
Without the abundance of summer foliage, colours that were once hidden become visible. Notice the subtle differences between tree bark, mosses, lichens, bare branches and fallen leaves.
Find Five Colours
Look around you and discover five different colours. They may be bright or barely perceptible. Give each one a name of your own - perhaps winter copper, frost silver or shadow blue.
Watch the Light
Winter's low sun can transform the landscape. A colour that appears dull beneath cloud can become luminous in sunlight. Notice how shadows, reflections and changing light alter what you see.
Return to this place on another day.
Perhaps the sky will be heavy with grey clouds, the ground silver with frost, or the trees glowing copper in the low sun.
The colours will be different each time.
And as you begin to notice more, you may discover that winter is far richer than you once imagined.
